a Solstice Mission
Its was all business this time - a friend had alerted us to the fact that piano keys are in fact weighted to enable the keys to smoothly return to their regular position after being played. This is achieved by inlayed disks of lead, one or two into the back end of each key.
Fortunately, the wood on the keys was soft, but still in tact. I was able to reach into the piano and easily break off the back half of all of the keys, collecting all the lead disks on shore.
It was surprising how easily the entire piano disassembled itself in this process. The various sections are now independent - free to float or sink as they please.
