Return to Unus Multorum 2020

We are one of so many. As individuals and groups we have to find ways of sharing the resources of the world amongst ourselves, and of maintaining them for the future. It is very difficult for us to understand and grasp the meaning of large numbers yet we need to be able to do this to enable us to live together and make sense of our world.

This work explores the idea of being one among many, and whilst each of us is an individual human being, in a large group we may appear as a sort of ‘sea of people’. The work contains many unique individuals, adults, children, dogs, family groups, all on the move in a repeating pattern where the individuals become lost in the large group.

In this time of Covid-19 it almost feels as if this work is part of history – we can no longer be part of a physical group for the time being – yet we are finding ourselves deeply connected and will need to find new ways of being together in our societies.

The figures are printed on silk which will flow as the air moves, and will be displayed with dried flowers as a sort of lament.  Hopefully I can display this on the wall in Plas Bodfa, in the meantime I installed and photographed it at home.

May 2020, Sarah Holyfield
