Ask the river - Community Mapping

What: creative activity
Where: Llangoed Village Hall
When: Saturday 26 April, 11:00 - 17:00

If the river were a person, what would it look like?
What would it say?
What would you say to it?

The activity creates deeper connections between the community and the river that flows through the landscape. The aim is to inspire local residents to engage with the river on a deeper, more personal level, reflecting on the river’s significance, not only as a natural resource but as a living, breathing entity that deserves care, respect, and protection.

Using tracing paper to create a ethereal feel to the piece they will use watercolour pencils, paints and water from the river itself to make a tangible connection to the natural world. words or sentences will be layered over their artwork which will be then be suspended over the river or from a tree to create a living moving installation of artworks which will come alive in the breeze.

Participants will also be invited to talk about the river, be it a memory or some other type of connection to it, or any thoughts, feelings or opinions they have about the river and it's hopes for it's future. This will allow us to map not only a visual representation of this river but also a journey of sound created by the local community.

This activity will be part of the Public Map Platform which is an open-source digital map platform that will be used to help inform the planning systems for the local, regional and national bodies. This activity data will feed into the ongoing research being collected and collated as part of the pilot on Ynys Mon with the aim to give communities a voice and to deepen the connection between people and place. All participants will be asked for their consent to have their data used for the project.
