‘The Silent Voice’ by Michael Prince

What: sculptural installation
Where: Llangoed Village Hall
When: 26 & 27 April, 11:00 - 17:00

Using salt and water from Ynys Môn, words are revealed on a series of cards through the illumination of light. The salt gives an apparent delicate fragility whilst exhibiting great strength through the crystals.

Michael says:
“The idea of the salt comes from my own land art, first made in Norfolk, inspired by and influenced by Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long, and the use of words from Bob and Roberta Smith.

The work investigates identity through written language. Haunted by the story of my grandmother, Ivy, when she was 8 years old, rejecting the opportunity to learn Welsh at school, believing it to be a "dead language" and forever regretting that choice, these works look at the idea that language and the associated identity therein, is hidden, dormant, until interaction occurs through reading or speaking, bringing it back to life.”
